摘要: In previous field experiments conducted in the sub-tidal areas off the east coast of Hainan province, China, the growth rates of both the pearl oyster Pinctada martensi (Dumker) and the red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) were higher in a co-culture system than in a mono-species culture system. In this study, we further investigated the effect of co-cultivation on the production and quality of the pearls harvested from the oysters. The production rate of the pearl was determined by the pearl nucleus retention rate while the quality was determined by the thickness of the pearls' nacre layers as well as the judgment of an experience jeweller. While there was no significant difference in the pearl nucleus retention rate between the oysters raised under the two culture conditions, the yield of premium quality pearls from the oysters raised under the co-culture conditions was consistently higher than that from the oysters raised under the mono-species culture conditions. The nacre of the pearls harvested from co-culture condition was consistently thicker and more homogeneous than that from the mono-species culture condition. These results suggested that environmental factors have a significant influence on the bio-mineralization process of nacre. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
