摘要: Three circulation indices are defined for the tropical, subtropical and subpolar gyres in the northern Pacific (hereafter, TG, STG and SPG) based on the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation product. A singular spectrum analysis of these three gyre-indices reveals that the temporal evolution of the SPG, STG and TG are dominated by different timescales. A possible mechanism is proposed that the observed interannual to interdecadal variations in the upper ocean temperatures involves the adjustment of different gyres. Results show that the North Pacific multidecadal variability tends to be associated with the SPG adjustment, while the decadal variability tends to be associated with both the STG and SPG adjustment. The tropical-extratropical interaction on the interannual timescale can be also explained in the view of changes of the basin scale gyre's intensity.
